What a tour!

The Genome Sequencing Center Tour

Mark asked us if we would give a "layperson's" response to accompany the picture of those of us that went on the tour that he arranged.

It was mind-boggling, but also mind-expanding. The very capable and knowledgeable tour guide took us to the laboratories that best showed the steps in the sequencing process. We expected to see individual scientists and lab technicians doing experiments at lab benches. As it turned out, what we saw were rooms filled with computers and other automated sophisticated equipment churning out the data and performing tasks that would, at the end, provide the data that enables the scientists to gain a richer understanding of the biological process common to all living things. (That mouthful is a quote from the brochure that we were given.)

To realize that the Human Genome Project was begun first in 1990 and completed in 2003 is truly amazing, and now the information is being applied in laboratories worldwide to almost every area of medical research. That's really impressive. Currently the Center is focusing on the genomes of many other organisms including the mouse, chicken, champanzee and, of all things, corn!

Our thanks to Mark for making the arrangements for this very interesting tour.

I.D. on Nova

Sorry for the late notice, but during our tour of the Genome Center today, one of our "regulars" mentioned that Nova (on PBS) was airing a special on Intelligent Design tonight. Here is the link to their website on the show (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/id/) as well as a link to find other times it will air (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/schedule-local.html). If anyone watches this and would like to comment on it, please do.

Getting to the Genome Center

Tuesday is the day! We're scheduled to start the tour at 2 p.m.. Below is a map showing the location of the Genome Center. The address is 4444 Forest Park Ave.

If anyone is interested in carpooling, please drop me an email (drew@wustl.edu) and we'll try and work something out. I know of at least one person who would be interested. Leaving from the Emmanuel parking lot at ~1:15 p.m. should allow for enough time.
